Well I’ve had my LG E900 Windows for one day and I’m already feeling disappointed.
One of the fundamental requirements I would have expected (and no I didn’t research, I assumed. Just like you assume a car has wheels  Embarrassed ) is a backup tool for SMS, files etc.
Surely, until some of these utilities can be proved Windows will be a bit player in the market, especially, from a business perspective.
Unless someone can help me out it looks like an expensive toy not a tool.  Cry

hmm. now lets put things into perspective here..
just this one missing feature has made you disappointed with this wonderful OS and cast it as an expensive "toy"  Sad  .. this just breaks my heart, dude!  Grin

why would you need to back up SMS anyway? for evidence of some sort? I for one haven't missed this feature at all.. But this is just me and it is not because I love the phone or anything but it is just that I have never wanted it... Even when I had the Nokia 5800 which was all out for backing up EVERYTHING.. I never backed up my messages. They are just space eaters imho.  Grin

come on now, I think what is needed is a little bit of discipline, routine, and a bit of spring cleaning ..
If you get things like email addresses / telephone numbers / important street addresses / people's names etc etc that are stored in SMS messages I make it a point to create new contacts immediately so that they get saved on google or windowslive. [That's backed up]

If you have personal lovey dovey messages why don't you copy them and paste them in a word document so that they get saved on SkyDrive. I know it is a little long winded but if you love the person then what is the extra mile ahh?  Wink  [That's backed up as well now]

what else would you like stored in messages? Maybe there is a way around it.. let us know..

get into the habit of deleting unnecessary spam SMS.. If you are not interested in it delete it straight away. this way you will only keep the ones you really want and it will make life easier when you have to someday 'wipe out' all the messages. So you can have a once over in your inbox go through all the important messages that are remaining and find a way to save them using other resources.

Please don't get me wrong.. It is not that I have disregarded your cry for help, I know this feature must be important to you but chill dude, enjoy the phone a bit more.. don't let this ruin your Windows experience .. look at the bigger picture Cheesy There is always some sort of work around for the time being.

Thanks for the comments but I believe you have missed my point.
SMS is now an important communication mechanism. Business decisions can be made or actions commenced on the strength of SMS messages. Are we not in the age of instant communication tools or do I still need faxes and  couriers?
To protect one’s own and others interests - backups are imperative.  Do you run backups on your PC, your work servers etc.  Of course you do or you should.

And no I’m not interested in keeping any lovey dovey messages.  I’m just interested in keeping my ass covered.

The lack of these facilities makes it a toy not a business tool no matter how pretty the interface is.
Cheers.

Oh I see!!
I never deal with business matter via SMS so didn't even think of such a thing...
You can always copy and paste this important business information into Word and back it up into SkyDrive for the time being. I'm sure someone will think of an app. There is also a way you can request for this app/feature; just follow the link in this thread.

Yes, we are in an age of instant communication that's why emailing someone is just as fast as texting.. Safer/Reliable/efficient.. you get an email just as quickly on your phone as you would an SMS.. And windowsphone is all about emails.. And I think most businesses would operate using email...So I don't think the missing back-up feature for SMS makes it any less of a Business Phone.

I insist on business matters been handled via email or in person ..  Wink  [different people different outlook I suppose]

I didn't know why you wanted your SMS backed up so hence the lovey dovey comment...  Wink Most people who want their SMS backed up want it for some lovey dovey reason.. no offence.

Can be done.. But requires unlocked phone.. Much like Android you need rooted phones to backup you're messages.

There does seem to be a lack of backups for WP7 though it hasn't been an issue for me yet it may in the future. the odd thing is I'm pretty sure the WP7 has a backup system as I believe it get backed up and restore for an update(could be wrong though).

But if your looking for SMs backup that is possible to do with some apps. I took a quick browse in the Marketplace and found an messaging app called Zapi Messaging, this app will backup and messages(also emails) sent through the app. So if you use this you'll be fine. The a full version and a free one as well.

I only took a minute and searched for backup and this is one that came up. I'm sure there are more out there that do the same type of thing but that will be up to you to find.

as the description says you can only backup sms if you use the app and not the ones already in your inbox ..

I'm not to sure what sms has to do with important business decisions.. I'm sure email would be more suited to a business situation, however your point is correct and WP does have a lack of ways to back up important info, but you've written off a fairly young OS for one reason?? The OS has plenty of business tools that no other OS has... Such as excel and unlimited email accounts... give it 3 weeks and your love wp
